In the late 1980s and early 1990s, while I was living first in Zimbabwe and later in Brazil, I worked closely with the journalists Steve Askin and Carole Collins. Steve especially was a patient mentor, teaching me how to construct and write a story in 800 or 1500 words. He encouraged me to cover stories that I would not have imagined from angles I would not have dreamed of, for publications I hadn't even heard of. We wrote together, and we wrote separately. I also began to reflect on Southern African as a region in conference papers.
